The main differences between universal couplings and conventional couplings in the metallurgical industry lie in their design features, functions and application scenarios:

Design Features: A universal coupling is a four-bar linkage mechanism, usually composed of multiple universal joints. Its design is more sophisticated, enabling more stable power transmission. In contrast, conventional couplings may not have such a complex structure. For example, a constant velocity joint (CV joint) consists of six main components: an inner race, an outer race, steel balls, a clamp, a dust cover and a cage, and is characterized by its telescopic capability.

Functions and Application Scenarios: Universal couplings are mainly used for power transmission scenarios where there is a large angular deviation between different axes, varying speed requirements, as well as impact and vibration interference. They are suitable for achieving continuous rotation and reliably transmitting torque and motion when an included angle exists between two axes. In the metallurgical industry, heavy-duty universal shaft couplings are commonly applied in equipment such as metallurgical machinery. On the other hand, conventional couplings do not possess such a large angular compensation capacity, and are thus suitable for occasions where the axial included angle is small or frequent angular adjustment is not required.


In summary, universal couplings are more widely used in the metallurgical industry, especially in applications requiring accommodation of large angular deviations, impacts and vibrations. Conventional couplings, however, are suitable for simpler and more stable transmission environments.
