Factors of selecting couplings

Factors to be considered when selecting couplings are as follows:
  1. The magnitude and nature of the torque to be transmitted, as well as requirements for buffering and vibration damping. For example, gear couplings can be adopted for high-power heavy-duty transmission. For transmission subjected to severe impact loads or requiring elimination of torsional vibration of the shaft system, highly elastic couplings such as tyre couplings can be selected.
  2. Operating speed of the coupling and the centrifugal force generated. For high-speed transmission shafts, couplings with high balancing accuracy such as diaphragm couplings should be selected, while slider couplings with eccentricity are not suitable.
Couplings are matched with various types of main equipment and operate under complex ambient conditions, including temperature, humidity, water, steam, dust, sand, oil, acids, alkalis, corrosive media, salt water, radiation and other conditions. These constitute important factors to be considered in coupling selection. For service conditions involving high temperature, low temperature, oil, acid and alkali media, flexible couplings with ordinary rubber as the elastic element shall not be adopted. Instead, flexible couplings with metal elastic elements such as diaphragm couplings and serpentine spring couplings should be chosen.
  1. Magnitude and direction of relative displacement between the two shafts. When strict precise alignment of the two shafts cannot be maintained after installation and adjustment, or considerable additional relative displacement occurs between the two shafts during operation, flexible couplings shall be selected. For instance, slider couplings are suitable for cases with large radial displacement, and universal joints can be adopted for connection of shafts with large angular displacement or intersecting shafts.
  2. Reliability of the coupling and service environment. Generally, couplings made of metal components that do not require lubrication feature higher reliability. The performance of couplings requiring lubrication is susceptible to the adequacy of lubrication, and leakage may cause environmental pollution. Couplings containing non-metallic elements such as rubber are sensitive to temperature, corrosive media and strong light, and prone to ageing.
  3. Manufacturing, installation, maintenance and cost of couplings. On the premise of satisfying service performance, couplings that are easy to assemble and disassemble, simple to maintain and low in cost should be selected. For example, rigid couplings feature a simple structure and convenient assembly and disassembly, and can be used for low-speed transmission shafts with high rigidity. General flexible couplings with non-metallic elastic elements (e.g., elastic sleeve pin couplings, elastic pin couplings, jaw-type elastic couplings) possess good comprehensive performance and are widely applied to general medium and low-power transmission systems.
