Application of Cross-Shaft Universal Couplings in Wide and Heavy Plate Mills

In the metallurgical wide and heavy plate rolling production line, cross-shaft universal couplings (universal spindles) serve as core power transmission components for the mill’s main drive system. They are responsible for power transmission between the main motor, reduction gearbox and work rolls. Their operational stability, load capacity and service life directly determine rolling accuracy, production efficiency and line availability of the rolling mill. These couplings are critical matching transmission parts for high-end 5m-class wide and heavy plate mills and 4100mm–4300mm medium and heavy plate mills. Based on years of practical experience with localized product deployment, this paper summarizes operating conditions, product advantages, field performance and technical upgrading trends, targeting the heavy-load, impact-prone and variable operating environment of wide and heavy plate mills.


I. Application Background and Core Technical Requirements


Wide and heavy plate mills operate under extremely severe rolling conditions, differing from conventional section mills. Four key operating characteristics exist during production: high torque loads, periodic impact loads, dynamic roll displacement and multi-dimensional shaft misalignment.
Intense vibration and instantaneous impacts occur in the cyclic process of steel plate biting, rolling and plate ejection. Meanwhile, roll gap and roll system angles require frequent dynamic adjustment to accommodate plates of various specifications, resulting in continuous angular and positional deviation of the transmission axis. This imposes stringent requirements on transmission components in terms of compensation capability, load performance and fatigue resistance.
Conventional rigid transmission components cannot adapt to the mill’s dynamic operating conditions. They are prone to stress concentration, component deformation and power transmission interruption, which seriously impair plate flatness and dimensional accuracy. Frequent failures and downtime for maintenance substantially increase production costs.
Benefiting from the structural merits of multi-directional articulation, cross-shaft universal couplings enable large-angle and multi-dimensional dynamic compensation. They reliably accommodate roll axis offset and roll gap adjustment, ensuring continuous, stable and efficient power delivery throughout rolling. Optimized Connection Structure for Enhanced Overall Rigidity and Stability


The inherent defects of traditional long-key connection structures are eliminated via adoption of keyless thin-walled taper sleeve locking construction.

Traditional long-key designs weaken shaft rigidity. Under long-term alternating loads, periodic micro-deformation occurs, disrupting uniform lubricating oil films and accelerating component wear. The keyless taper sleeve structure transmits torque through integral interference fit without stress concentration points. It effectively avoids shaft deformation and oil film failure, greatly improving overall rigidity and operational stability of the transmission system for prolonged heavy-load and impact service.


Integrated Sealing and Locking Technology to Cut Operation and Maintenance Costs


Hydraulic locking technology combined with composite lip seal structure delivers dual performance improvements.

Hydraulic locking enables convenient operation and precise positioning, significantly shortening installation and alignment time and boosting on-site assembly efficiency. The composite lip seal provides outstanding sealing performance, effectively blocking ingress of cooling water, mill scale, dust and other contaminants into bearings and articulated parts. It prevents internal abrasion, corrosion and lubrication failure, markedly reducing equipment failure frequency and routine maintenance workload.


Modular Split Design to Minimize Production Loss from Downtime


The newly developed split universal joint features a modular split structure. Unlike conventional integral structures, vulnerable parts such as cross shafts, bearings and seals can be quickly replaced individually without disassembling the entire transmission system.
